The One Trick That Will Curb Your Spending
It’s amazing what the human mind can do. We can create elaborate narratives and believe them to be true. We can think ourselves into and out of stress. We can come up with the most unbelievable ideas. It’s a pretty neat thing to have. However, it is also the very thing that can keep us from sticking to our goals. If you know anything about will power, you’ll know it’s exhaustive. No one has an endless supply of it. A new fitness regime, healthy eating habits and even spending often gets side tracked because our minds just can’t seem to say no to us. We are, essentially, irresistible to ourselves.
So if your spending is out of control and you often find that you come up with reasons why you need something, here’s a simple trick you can use. Come up with reasons why you don’t. Easier said right?
This is how it works. If you want to buy a new fridge, you’ll come up with your reasons why. Maybe yours is old, doesn’t have enough storage space or simply isn’t appealing anymore. You will always find a way to convince yourself that you absolutely have to have it. However, stop for a moment and think about why you don’t need it. What would you do if you couldn’t get another one? It’s a much harder list but you will find more often than not, you have solutions to a challenge that don’t need to be solved with money. It will force you to be creative. Maybe the reason you aren’t getting the best out of your fridge is because you don’t have an existing system to organise your freezer so it always feels too small. If it’s aesthetics, ask yourself how long you actually spend in the kitchen, looking at that freezer.
Next time you’re about to make a big purchase, come up with your “What would I do without it” list before buying. If you still want to, sit on it for two weeks. After all that, if you’re still convinced, then hey, you probably do need that item.
As with all things, practice makes perfect!
